Wow! It was that time again.
A 100-meter race for bigbores was scheduled in Andel. And... as it happens, that’s pretty close to our headquarters.
To help Team LBC (Joost and Bram) prepare, we pulled a rifle from the arsenal that usually performs well with slugs (309 HP).
I've practiced twice, so I guess that'll have to be good enough.
Of course, I made a few dream shots during practice! But then you know that’ll be tough in a game. That’s when your blood pressure goes up a bit and your heart starts racing.
Another challenge, of course, is the competition from rifles that were developed later. But still: With a Beaumont—because that’s what we’re talking about—you can actually still do very well. They always perform well, and on a really good day, you can even take first place with one.
Well, it had been a while since I’d competed in a match. Busy schedule, COVID, and some physical issues. Let’s just say I’ve used up my deductible on hospital treatments. And for my son Bram: his very, very first competition ever. Haha, so it didn’t even matter how the other competitors shot. It was a father-son competition.
No more cleaning, greasing, or oiling—because that just brings bad luck. I did, however, categorize the heads into heavy, lighter, lighter still, and lightest.
On October 6, I packed the Transit Connect full of stuff for the competition. Man: That makes firing the gun a lot easier and lighter to lift. I even filled and brought along a spare bottle because: Bad luck never comes alone!
There were also a lot of familiar faces, and the organizers quickly assigned us to lane 3. That was convenient because it meant we could be scheduled for different rounds without having to call off and stop the whole event... And: It was our turn to shoot pretty quickly.
Conclusion: We were the best-shooting Beaumonts that day, and my son Bram beat me by a mere 1 point! Luckily, I did manage to shoot two perfect targets. Yeah, you’ve got to find a way to make light of it when you lose, of course. Better luck next time, I guess?
For enthusiasts: Beaumont 309 with a Wood2Stock green laminated stock, Atlas H5 bipod, Sightron S3 6-24x50 scope, Bascule regulator, 9-liter carbon cylinder, pressure 220 bar, grains velocity 127 grains at 253 meters per second. The rifle is for sale, by the way! It belongs to an enthusiast with a large garden.
